17: After the bombing, Katniss finds Rue tangled in a net set by a career from district 1. There she lay half dead with a spear through her stomach.
18: Katniss promises to Rue that she will win the Hunger games, then sings to her as Rue’s dying wish. Soon after Rue’s death, Katniss discovers that two members of a certain district are allowed to win, and immediately calls out Peeta’s name.
19: After the change in rules, Katniss becomes allies with Peeta, and then realizes that in order to gain sponsors; Katniss would have to pretend to be in love with him.
20: After receiving a dinner from a sponsor, Katniss and Peeta eat it to regain strength they lost during the games. After they finish their meal, they here news that there is a backpack with medicine capable of curing Peeta's wounds. Peeta does not want Katniss to go get the pack because he thinks it is too risky. Although Peeta told her not to she drugs him with sleep syrupy she received by a sponsor so she can sneak out to get the medicine that is vital to Peeta’s life.
21: Katniss attempts to get the backpack, but is soon stopped by Clove. Luckily, Thresh gets there in time to save Katniss from Clove. Thresh plans to kill Katniss, but decides otherwise when he hears of Katniss' alliance with Rue, then afterwords, Katniss returns to the cave.
22: This chapter is mostly about how Peeta and Katniss' relationships grows. And kissy stuff.
Katniss: Katniss learned that there was more to the Hunger Games than surviving through the night, and that she was much more important than a piece in the Capital’s entertainment. But, I think she had conflicting emotions because as soon as she discovered this, Katniss also found out that if she wanted to get out alive, she would have to play by the Capital’s rules.
Peeta: Petta has begun to express his love for Katniss, probably because he thinks his life won't last much longer in the arena. He also shows that he is a valuable player in the Hunger Games and he isn't just some pain in the other player's neck, because he is excellent at camouflage. And, when Katniss goes to find the backpack, Peeta doesn't want Katniss to go. I think this is because he doesn't want her to risk her life when he assumes he will die anyway.
Thresh: We dont know a lot about Thresh but we do know he has a large heart, a love for many things, a very good player, and his death could have been avoided if he wasnt so kind. Also, when Thresh had the option to kill Katniss, he chose to let her go because of he former alliance with Rue. This shows that he had a strong value in friendship.
Rue: Rue was a character with a lot of potential and died a tragic death. At her very last moments, Rue tells Katniss to win the Hunger Games. Rue told Katniss this because she wanted Katniss to see the world outside of the arena because Rue would never get to. I think this is a BIG BANG! to the reader because she is the first character besides Peeta and Katniss that the reader actually gets a chance to bond with.
KEY PASSAGES: "Slowly, as if not to wake her, I lay her head back on the ground and release he hand" "'They're sweet as syrup,'" he says." "'Just this one time, I'll let you go,"'
PICTURES: This picture demonstrates what happened to Rue at the time of her death. This is a picture of Peeta's repulsive leg infection.
